Last night we spoke at a wonderful event held by Love London which was put together to raise money for Trinity Hospice in Clapham who cared for Lisa Lynch, a fellow blogger and an incredibly inspiring woman who sadly passed away in 2013 after battling cancer. Please do take a look at her blog here- http://alrighttit.blogspot.co.uk/. It’s funny, inspiring and a brilliant read.
Now- back to the blogging tips! At the event we spoke about making money from your blog, and one of the key points we decided to push was the importance of having a mailing list. Here I’m going to detail why you need a mailing list, and what it can do for you:
- You Can Use a Mailing List as a USP!
With so many bloggers out there putting their all into making it in the blogging world, it is absolutely essential that you think of ways to stand out and make your site as valuable as possible. One way that you can do this is by creating a mailing list! Lots of bloggers spend lime focusing on their social stats- but not many have a mailing list they can use to promote brands, so if you can create a small but valuable mailing list in your sector you’ll instantly have something which will help you stand out to brands.
- You Can Use a Mailing List as Another Revenue Stream
So, once you’ve bagged some new brands using your mailing list as a unique selling point you can start using it as an extra channel to make money. To give an example, if you’re a beauty blogger looking to work with an up and coming beauty brand you’ll be able to offer them a feature in your next newsletter. The brand will be incredibly happy to be sailing into the inbox’s of your engaged and relevant followers- and you’ll have found another way to provide something valuable to brands that you can charge for.
But wait a minute- I’m a small blogger, how can I get people to sign up to my mailing list?!
If this was your first thought- don’t worry, we have the answer to this too! You can of course consider running a competition or something to incentivise people to sign up, but I would advise using your content to bring in sign-ups as this will ensure those who are signing up will truly be interested in your blog and will become long standing readers. Think about creating a really in-depth and valuable piece of content that your readers will be very keen to read. You can then promote this piece of content, and offer it to people who sign up to your mailing list. This is a great way to make sure you’ll be getting engaged and relevant people signing up to your mailing list, who will stay with you in the long term.
I hope this helps! If you can action one thing this week, I’d really recommend creating a mailing list!
