What to Do with Your Blog Whilst You’re on Holiday

Blogging whilst you're on holiday

In my view a holiday should be just that- a relaxing holiday from everything, some time to wind down and take a well earned break. However, even just 2 weeks of blog abandonment can be detrimental to your readership- especially if there is no explanation! The best way to deal with vacations and blogging is to get uber organised and plan everything before you leave. Although there are certain things you can do whilst you’re away, it totally depends on your blog. So here are a few pointers for those of you planning a summer holiday….

1.       Scheduling

I thought I’d get the obvious one out of the way first! Scheduling is a life saver for travelling bloggers the world over. If you’re just jetting off for a 2 week holiday, posts can be quite easily dealt with by writing them before you leave and scheduling them to go live whilst you’re away. Pretty much all blogging platforms have really clear and easy to use scheduling systems, allowing you to preview your posts so you know what to expect once they’re live on your site.

2.       Using Your Holiday as Extra Content

This depends totally on the type of blog you own. If your blog is a lifestyle, food, fashion, parenting or personal blog then a holiday is an excellent opportunity to create some really lovely content for your readers. My advice would be to sit down and research where you’re headed to plan a few great reviews, photo shoots or guides! Of course you may not be able to get these live until you arrive back home, but make notes, take photos and start planning. Blogging whilst on holiday can be really fun if you get creative; you could find local recipes, interview local characters and take some beautiful photos- the possibilities are endless.

3.       Previews on Social Media

If you do plan to post about your trip, and have wifi, use your social media profiles to post sneak preview images of your holiday! Instagram and Facebook are perfect for this as they’re both really visual networks. Just a couple of posts will do; this is a great way to keep your social profiles relevant whilst you’re away- and not just full of scheduled stuff.

4.       Warn your Readers

If you disappear for 3 weeks without a word, it’s not going to go down well with your readership! A short and sweet post just telling your readers you’re going away so content and posting will be a little lower than usual will let people know you haven’t stopped blogging- you’re just having a well deserved break!

Some bloggers can get panicked at the prospect of going abroad and having to cut down on blogging time- but it is by no means the end of the world. In fact, you could get some really lovely and exciting content out of it; see your holiday as an opportunity for your blog, not an inconvenience. With a bit of planning, you can maintain your blog and even enhance it during your holiday!

When I went to Florida in March I had a great time using Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Foursquare to check in at various places and post pictures too. With the time difference I also managed to write posts and publish before the kiddies woke up!! I did take my MacBook with me.

Yeah there are so many social sites that are ideal for holiday snaps! It’s great you were making the most of it!

Literally having this dilemma at the moment! Leaving for a two week holiday tomorrow and I am running out of time to write and plan! Ahh…I have scheduled some “throwback” posts to be sent out on Thursdays via social media and I’m hoping to schedule some before we leave. Unfortunately where we are staying is uber remote- good for relaxation but not good for a busy blogger!

Sometimes it’s helpful to really switch off and relax- like I said in the article, as long as you tell your readers to expect a content gap you’ll be fine!!

      Have an amazing holiday!

I just went away for the weekend and it seemed like an eternity not blogging and checking social media! I recommend scheduling.
    Thanks for the post. :-)
