The Importance of Instagram for Your Personal Brand

Whether you’re aware of it or not, if you’re making use of social networks, you have a social media strategy. You might not have a formal document that you’ve typed up and stick to religiously, but you’ll more than likely have at least a basic outlook that determines your activity. This might include which platforms you use to post content, how often you post, what you post, and who you interact with.

Realising this, you should take into consideration that featuring Instagram in your blog’s social media strategy has never been more significant. As a mobile based platform, it’s important to understand the influence of mobile activity and how this can impact your blog. If you’ve never used Instagram before or only use it now and again, it might be worth giving it a go!

Jenn Herman from Jenn’s Trends recently produced an insightful SlideShare presentation, detailing Instagram stats for July 2014. While it’s so difficult to tether down statistics relating to such a dynamic and developing platform, we think this revealed some incredibly useful information. By letting Instagram become an integral part of your blog’s social strategy, it could help to shape your personal brand, and ultimately improve your blog’s visibility.

One statistic that I found particularly interesting is that “Instagram engagement is 15 times higher than Facebook engagement”. Where Facebook used to be the one and only social network, it’s understandable that more exciting and accessible platforms will come into use, especially as Facebook appears to be losing popularity in general.

Your blog followers who use Instagram have it at their fingertips whenever they need it, often accessing it to pass the time on a train, on a lunch break or just before bed. Taking this into consideration, there are a variety of ways to grab their attention and if you’re starting from scratch.

By giving your readers exclusive access to the blogger events you attend, some “behind the scenes” photos of your cat, or by accompanying the announcement of your latest blog post with some beautiful imagery, users are more likely to engage.

It can only be beneficial to give your potential audience more options to find your content, especially in such a popular location, and one that can host such stunning photography. Besides, wouldn’t you rather be inspired by the Instagram page of your favourite blogger, than trawling through a Facebook page which might not be updated as often!?

If you’d like to measure your Instagram performance to see how your presence is growing, you can check out Iconosquare’s great statistics reporting tool. This is brilliant for monitoring engagement with your account, and useful to put together a media pack if you intend to start working with brands!

I love instagram! I use it daily, but haven’t really used it for my blog besides adding the URL to my profile. My main issue is that if I link to my blog in the description of a instagram, it doesn’t turn into a hyperlink? It is great for networking though – one way of getting people interested!

Hi Becky, thanks for your comment! I love Instagram too, it can be a lot of work, but it’s so good for managing your blog brand!

I know what you mean, Instagram don’t allow links in comments – a good way around this could be to change your profile link to a specific blog post and mention in a photo caption that the link is in your profile :) The best thing is you can change the profile link as many times as you like!
