The benefits of blogging for online influencers
Social media sites come and go. While Facebook may be right at the top of the social media tree just now (at least in terms of raw numbers), once upon a time that was true of MySpace (and before that there was Friendster…).
Blogs, however, have stood the test of time and are still some of the most popular sites on the internet. What’s more, they can be started for a very low cost (or even for free) and are both affordable and easy to manage. This makes them a great choice for anyone looking to make a name as an online influencer.
You can start a blog purely to showcase your skills
These days, effective communication skills are a prerequisite for most jobs and, at a very basic level, running a blog demonstrates that you can string a coherent sentence together. The better the quality of your blog, the more it has the power to impress a potential employer.
Running a blog can make you a more attractive job candidate for many other reasons too. For example, one of the basic rules of successfully blogging is that you need to provide content on a regular basis, at least once a week. Making this happen demonstrates both organisation and commitment and, again, both of these qualities are very appealing to employers.
Hosting your own blog also gives you an opportunity to showcase your knowledge and skills, which will persuade employers that you are the right fit for them. It can act as a portfolio of sorts, demonstrating your design skills, your craft knowledge or your photography, for instance. Alternatively, a specialist blog focusing on finance, law or human resources can all act as an extended CV to persuade employers that you are the person they need, depending on the job you are applying for.
A blog can be used to generate straightforward, passive income
Once you’ve established your blog and built a following, you have the opportunity to make some income by running adverts on your site. This can be implemented with minimal effort and, if you want to pick up a bit of extra money, then it can be a hassle-free way to do so.
You could also look at the likes of Amazon Affiliates, which can be a helpful way to top up the income you earn from a blog. Remember, though, that currently only the Premium and Business versions of WordPress allow affiliate links and ads. The free and Personal plans or wordpress.com ban them, so using self-hosted wordpress.org is always preferable.
Choose to work with your dream brands
If you really want to earn money from a blog, you need to become an influencer and build your own brand to ultimately work with established brands to help sell their products.
The good news is that, these days, brands are looking for quality and engagement much more than just raw numbers so you have a decent chance of being taken seriously as a (micro) influencer with as few as 1000 followers. You may find that brands approach you to suggest a collaboration as you become more successful, so keep on top of your online presence and work hard to build relationships as you become more popular and influential.
Building a sponsorship relationship with a brand can be another way to truly impress a potential employer. It demonstrates that you can work with others, can attract support in your work and are considered to be influential and reliable.
