How to promote your Blog aside from using Social Media.

You don’t need us to tell you that social media is a powerful way to promote your blog. We know that, it’s obvious right?

What isn’t so obvious is that it can actually make us a little lazy. We hope, after reading this post it will open your eyes to other ways to get your blog out there.

As you read this through remember; the more you put in, the more you will get out…

Remember you are a human being

Wait, what really!? Profound stuff we know, but when sat behind a computer screen it is easy to forget. Use your human qualities to promote not only your blog, but yourself. When you change to that mind-set you will see how many opportunities there are to promote your blog, as well as the reaction you get when asking others to help you promote it.

So, what do we actually mean by this?

Don’t simply think about getting your blog out there, but get YOURSELF out there. Attend blogger events, enter awards, offer to speak (scary we know, but this does wonders!), ask to judge awards. Don’t be lazy now…

There is also another side to this ‘remembering you are a human being malarkey’…

Build real relationships with people as you would do in real life, because this is real life, remember. Get to know your peers and industry influences, chat to them, meet up with them, bond with them, and make sure you’re not just doing this to ‘get something out of them’.

The best way to achieve this is to show genuine interest in their work; ask questions, praise them (genuinely), offer recommendations, share their content or anything else you can think of! Yes, slightly more time consuming, but real relationships scale better and you will get better results in the long term.

Make sure people can find you through search

It’s important to keep Google happy, he’s kinda a big deal.

There is a huge opportunity to capture web traffic through ensuring your blog is well optimised for search. Now, this isn’t a post on SEO but this previous post is a good starting point – How to Write an SEO-Friendly Blog Post.

It may even be worth seeking expert help with this as it can make a real difference to your promotion efforts!

Competitions and giveaways

A nice, simple and fun way to generate a buzz around your blog is to run a competition or giveaway. Get creative with this, the more interesting the competition the higher impact it will have. A bland multiple choice question for a product giveaway just may not do the trick – especially when you are just starting out.

Think of an attention grabbing giveaway or way to enter – be original.

Tracking the results and stats of the competition are essential in order to measure its success.

Create an email list

This ties in quite nicely with the above. Nobody gives away their emails for nothing, so you will need to incentivise them. We are a selfish lot so there needs to be something in it for them!

As well as running a competition to create a buzz, it is also an excellent way to build your email list. There are many tools and widgets out there to enable you to do this.

If you don’t want to run a competition to build your list, then ensure you at least give your readers a value proposition. Give them a reason to sign up e.g. ‘Sign up to the mailing list in order to…..……?’

Once you have built up your list you can begin to use this channel to promote your blog. But no bombardment! Put yourself in your reader’s shoes, what sort of content would you like to see pinging into your inbox?

………

So, as you can see there are more ways to promote your blog than posting a link to it from your Twitter every so often. Yes, a little more effort, but put in the hard graft now and your blog will start promoting itself….how good does that sound!?

Any other suggestions? As always, we would love to hear your comments….
