Career Options for Bloggers

Running a successful blog is certainly something to be proud of. Anyone who knows what it takes to build a following and a loyal readership will respect a blogger who’s created a thriving site. This will absolutely give you an advantage when you’re talking to employers, and there are a few careers out there that are completely aligned with the skills you’ll have developed as a blogger. If you’re thinking about how you can use your expertise to develop a career you’re passionate about, here are a few ideas on what kind of roles you’ll be able to thrive in:

Digital/Online Editor

For this role, you’ll need to be capable of overseeing the running of a site so organisational skills are absolutely key. You also may well need to work with other writers, so if you’ve had experience of delegating work and collaborating with guest bloggers this experience will no doubt come in handy.

Aside from organisational skills you need to have creative vision and be business savvy. The bottom line is, all publications need to be profitable and as an editor your input will be needed here. A position similar to this will demand you to be creative and pragmatic simultaneously, so make sure you’re able to demonstrate both skills.

Digital PR

Many of you will have experienced online PR’s getting in touch regarding a variety of opportunities; the chances are you’ll know what makes a good pitch- and more importantly what makes a bad one!

There are a few qualities that are fairly compulsory if you’re looking to get into PR, and one of the most important is to be able to build relationships with people easily. In digital PR a lot of what you do will focus on working with bloggers, so if you’re part of the blogging community and engage with your fellow bloggers then you’ll have an immediate advantage.

Social Media Strategist

As a blogger it’s very likely that you’ll run a few of your own social media profiles.  I’m not saying this makes you a total expert- but it gives you a great grounding to enter the social media industry if you can make a success of your own channels. The ultimate goal for many social media professionals is to get to a strategic level. As with our first point, creative vision is key here- as is an understanding of how to execute social media campaigns which will boost brand loyalty, and ultimately sales.

This is a great post. I’ve started my blog while recovering from cervical cancer. I am a primary school teacher but am now unsure of going back to work as things have changed so dramatically in my life. I’m getting lots of encouraging feedback so far and would love to turn the blog into something more longterm. Any other tips are hugely appreciated (or comments on the blog, of course!).
